Updraft

A drone climbs out of the fog in one scroll.

The live preview runs real 3D in your browser, so on this device it can take longer to appear and scroll less smoothly. The video above shows the full site.

A pre-order site for UPDRAFT UD-1, a made-up 249-gram camera drone. At blue hour, under valley fog, the drone hovers in front of its own name, and the scroll is its climb: the title's letters part as it rises through them, then the fog does, its propeller wash carving a swirling tunnel through real volumetric cloud while its landing light glows in the mist. It breaks out into the sunrise with the hole it punched below it and a town's lights showing through, a drone app's flight readout keeping the altitude, the climb rate and the battery. Then it comes apart mid-flight, every part traced back to its place and labeled as the camera goes round, and the camera dives through its lens to skim the fog tops into the sun before reservations with colorways that repaint the drone. The drone, the fog, the sky and the valley are all built in code. For drones, cameras, wearables and any hardware launch.

How it's made

  1. A drone built from its measurements

A 160 mm body lofted from superellipse sections and split at its seam into two molded halves with a wall, a gloss visor with stereo eyes and a lidar window, fold hinges, swept arms, slotted motor bells and 6-inch props with a cambered, twisted airfoil, about 174,000 triangles, all generated in code.

  2. Markings in its own uv

Panel lines, vents, the visor, the wordmark on the lid and the small print underneath are painted on one canvas in the shell's arc-length uv, so a single texture serves every colorway and the colors change live.

  3. Real volumetric fog

The fog is raymarched from tiling Perlin-Worley and Worley noise baked into 3D textures on the GPU, lit by a low sun with a light march, a two-lobe phase for the silver lining and the sky's fill dimmed by the cloud above.

  4. The prop wash parts it

The wash lives in the cloud's density: a tunnel round the drone's climb that swirls and streams down and stays open behind it, a bubble opening above it and a downwash cone below. Over the fog sea the cursor parts the tops like a second prop.

  5. The scroll is the climb

The drone's height comes straight off the scroll, the light follows its height from blue hour to sunrise, and a drone app's readout keeps the altitude, the climb rate, the battery and the status, with a sliding altitude tape.

  6. Blue hour to sunrise

A sky of keyed light with the sun's glow and disc, a valley, river and town drawn in the sky dome whose lights fade to their average glow below a pixel, droplets streaming past in the fog, and god rays through the gaps in the cloud and the props.

  7. Apart in mid-air

27 parts come away from the magnesium frame on their own paths while the props keep turning: the shell halves, the main board, heat sink, fan, GNSS patch, battery, arms, motor bells lifting off copper-wound stators, the props, five lens elements and the sensor, each traced back by a dashed guide and labeled a few at a time.

  8. Through the lens

The camera pushes into the gimbal's iridescent glass and, through a flash, looks out of it, skimming the fog tops into the sun under a viewfinder that turns to a native 9:16 portrait frame.

  9. A frame budget

The fog draws at half the screen's size and settles over a few frames, reprojected and clamped, so its dither disappears. It holds 60 fps at 1440 x 900; if the frame rate drops, the fog's resolution steps down first, and every shader compiles behind the loader.

Needs WebGL 2 with 3D textures: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on desktop and phones. Phones get a lighter drone, a smaller fog target with fewer steps, fewer droplets and a smaller shadow map, and the resolution steps down by itself if the frame rate drops. Without WebGL the page lies flat over a painted sunrise. Reduced motion turns off the smooth scroll and the cursor's wind. Tested in headless Chromium at 1440 x 900 and 390 x 844; Safari, Firefox and real phones weren't part of the tests.

  1. Buy it, or get it with a plan

Buy this kit on its own, or get every kit in the collection with a plan.

  2. Download the zip

It shows up in your library as soon as payment goes through. Up to 10 downloads a day, and each link works for 10 minutes.

  3. Run it

Unzip it, run npm install, then npm run dev to open the site on your machine. You need Node.js 20 or newer. The README says how to build it for any host.

npm install && npm run dev
  4. Make it your client's

Hand ADAPT.md to your AI builder (Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor) with the client's brief, or follow RESKIN.md to change colors, type, copy and media by hand.

Unlimited client projects, one person per license, no resale. Read the license

Built entirely in code: the drone, the volumetric fog, the sky, the valley and its town's lights are generated in the browser, and the site loads no model, image, video or audio files (its three typefaces come from Google Fonts). Written with an AI coding assistant (Claude Code) under Parallel's direction. UPDRAFT is a made-up drone, and every spec, price and date is a placeholder to replace.
